AMS-IX New York is a neutral, independent and distributed Internet exchange, spanning several locations in the New York/New Jersey area in the United States (US). The exchange is modeled after AMS-IX in Amsterdam, which is distributed over 12 different data centers serving close to 700 IP networks from around the globe, making it the world's leading Internet exchange. As in Amsterdam, the AMS-IX New York platform provides a professional, high quality, non-blocking peering service for all types of IP traffic, be it regular IP data such as email or web content, to also video/TV and hosting and cloud parties.

Open-IX initiative

AMS-IX New York is the only Open-IX certified Internet Exchange in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. Open-IX is an initiative of a group of Internet networks, content companies and other market parties, such as data centers, that encourages the development of neutral and distributed Internet exchanges and reduce IP interconnect complexity and cost in the US. In this part of the world this is more complicated and higher priced than in Europe, where the neutral and distributed over more than one data center Internet Exchange model, that AMS-IX also uses, is more common.

Structure AMS-IX New York

To enable the deployment of Internet exchanges in the US, it has been decided to set up a separate entity in this country. The entity (from here 'USA Inc') is a Delaware incorporated company, very similar to a Dutch BV. The USA Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMS-IX BV, whereby the two companies act independently from each other. AMS-IX BV will act solely as a shareholder. No employees or executives working in the Netherlands are placed in the USA Inc. or vice versa. Furthermore, the AMS-IX BV has several operating agreements with the US Inc. that define the operational framework within which the entity can act, as well as license the applicable intellectual property.

Parties that want to connect to AMS-IX New York have an option of becoming a member of the AMS-IX Association. Members receive the same services and have the same benefits as customers. The technical requirements and terms and conditions are the same. The additional advantage, and requirement, that membership brings is the ability to attend and vote in the AMS-IX Association General Meeting. Member representatives may also be nominated for the AMS-IX Executive Board.
